Aroma Festival

Many Sundays ago, in fact it was in June this year that I went with friends to town by train to the Aroma Festival at The Rocks, Sydney. I started this post the week after the festival but since have forgotten about it. I still think it is an interesting little bit of daily news I can add.

What a pleasure it was to walk around in the streets amongst so many people with the aroma of coffee and yummy food all over.

I must say I am not the greatest coffee connoisseur but I do appreciate the aroma.

I had freshly baked Dutch Poffertjes with chocolate. There was so much to choose from. All so tempting!!

We ventured into little alley ways which again was new to me. So much more to discover in this beautiful city of ours.

We were given a pine cupboard/dresser by friends who inherited it with a newly bought house. I was very grateful for the gift because it provided much needed packing space, but I do not have any love lost for pine. So for months was I dreaming of painting it but my husband thinks it is sacrilege to paint wood. It comes easy for me but I would definitely not paint precious wood or pieces of furniture.

So one Sunday afternoon my daughter and I tackled the job. What fun I had to experience the transformation.

Everybody that comes in remark on how beautiful it looks and how much it changes the atmosphere of the place. Even some men have noticed the difference!!

The painting on the easel was my second since arriving in Australia almost 2 years ago. It is a shame but as most ex-pats know does it take a while for one to find your equilibrium again, but I do think I am getting there. It was a thank you gift so I was forcing myself to start and complete it.

Featherdale Park

As a rule do I not like zoos but if you want to show visitors the interesting wild life of OZ is it necessary to succumb at times.

Wallabies

So off we went to Featherdale Wildlife Park in Blacktown, Sydney. It was great and I think we saw everything accept the platypus. Can't think there can be any more of these strange Australian animals around.

The koalas specially are absolutely gorgeous. They sleep most of the time because their diet, which consists only of eucalyptus leaves are very low in nutritional value. I only discovered to my dismay last year that they are also marsupials. My very learned friend from SA was just as surprised as me to gain that little bit of knowledge. Made me feel better...

I am also able to tell the difference between a kangaroo and a wallaby after our visit. A wallaby's coat has different colours where as a kangaroo's is only one colour. the Wallabies' tales are also thinner and shorter (I think..) and also the jaw bone structure of a Wallaby is different. I think the colour is the easier and more obvious difference.

The colourful and varied noises/songs the birds make was great to experience.

The fish and chips at the canteen was lovely and very affordable and the curio shop is well stocked with interesting souvenirs.

All in all a worthwhile outing with visitors.

First day on the beach!!

Summer came last week for a day and a bit and then it was gone. We are all holding our breaths.. When oh when??

Anyway, I was lured away by Tania on Tuesday morning to trek down to the beach (living in Sydney doesn't mean it's just a 10 min drive, no no, 45 minutes plus!!)

We went to Fresh Waters close to Dee Why, Northern beaches.

What a glorious idea and day it was . Thanks friend :)

We went away for the week end of my birthday and it was lovely to share the day and time with some of the most special people in my life. We left earlish on Friday morning. We slept at a quint little village called Burrawang. I would like to know the meaning of the word because Susan Duncan says in her book 'The House at Pittwater', they are having or doing a burrawang. If any Aussie knows, please help!

We stopped in Robertson, went to the cheese shop and tried to spot the hill where Babe's Maa sheep was attacked by a dog. The movie Babe was shot in that area. Beautiful pastures as you can remember for those who watched it. It still is one of my favourite movies and I never knew it was shot here in Ozland until I started looking for accommodation in the area and that bit of info came up in one of ads.

We also went to Moss Vale and Bowral. Bowral is a gorgeous town and again lots of quaint little shops and one could easily spend too much money there.

It took us much longer to travel from place to place than what is the norm because of all the stops we made to take pictures of the picturesque surrounds. I was breathing country again!!

We had supper at the pub of Burrawang Village Hotel. Most of us had roast lamb and veggies. Good value for money and the atmosphere was a typical country Friday night at the pub with friends and family. Lots of laughter and loud talking. Loved it!

We traveled through my favourite Kangaroo Valley, went to the Fitzroy Falls and even saw a Lyre bird, unfortunately without his tail feathers on display.

The next two nights we slept at Cudmirrah, just south of Jervis Bay and there my dad and Annelleen saw kangaroos for the first time. Moving around and grazing amongst the houses.

Monday we drove back via Berry, Gerringong and Kiama, where lots of photos were taken at the Blow Hole. It was glorious and our visitors were VERY impressed with the beautiful country side.

Half way mark...turning 50!!

Turning 50 was at first a daunting thought but then my mind opened up and I decided to tackle it head on and make something big of it. Maybe it is because we are settling into a new country, maybe it's because I've lost my brother when he was only 41, maybe it's because I wanted to share the day and my life with friends, maybe it's because there's so much more to do and see or maybe it's just because I am so grateful to be alive and are blessed beyond words. All of the above!!

I had no family at the celebration, which was sad but lots of wonderful friends were there who have become my adopted family.

Our dear friends Debbie and Gavin opened up their home and hearts for us and we had a great time at their house.

I put together a slide show of my life. From baby days to present, all the things I have done before hubby and all the things we have done together as a family. It was great, accept that the time frame between each slide was too short and I couldn't elaborate on some pictures. Maybe it was a good thing because some friends might have gotten bored.

Then hubby surprised me and also had a sweet celebration slide show to my honour. He got some friends (all ex pats in other countries) to compile beautiful video clips and writings. It was so special, thanks again guys.

The best of all hubby got our son, Gustaf who studies in Cape Town, South Africa on skype. Gustaf said the nicest things to his mom in front of all present.

What a great time I had, thanks to all who came!!

Dad's visit

My dad and his wife came to visit us for 2 weeks. It was short but packed full with lots of sight seeing, experiencing the Australian bush lands with all the amazing bird life and Eucalyptus trees and catching up on together time. He is so blessed to have such good health at 80!!

I'll share some of our outings in a few installments.

Scotland Island - I first got to know of Scotland Island when I read a book of Susan Duncan, an Australian author who lives at Lovett Bay in the area. It is part of Sydney Northern Beaches and more specific Pittwater. The link is to big to post here.

Their mode of transport is a little 'tinny' with an outboard engine or the public ferry. Would be great as a weekender but not for a permanent dwelling, specially if one has kids. There are quite a few families living there who love the life style.

I think this is the authors' house who lives on the mainland opposite Scotland Island. This area is part of the Kuring-gai Chase National Park. Wildlife in abundance.

Lazy Saturday

When last have I had a Saturday where I only got showered and dressed at one in the afternoon??!!! What fun!!

Hubby took our son to the airport at 4am. He will be visiting my brother in a 'remote' little town in Western Australia for a few weeks.

It is raining on and off and definitely not a day to do anything constructive... The rest of the morning and afternoon was spent reading, reading and more reading. My family is actually quite surprised that I managed to stay still for so long. My eyes are quite tired. But what fun!!

I am reading 'The Girl in Times Square' by Paullina Simons. We've had a few of her books in our book club back in South Africa. Enjoyable read.

Think it's time for me to go back to reading.

Hubby again doing the rounds, he's taking our daughter to a sleep over birthday party.

What shall we do tonight, just us, go out or stay in and read...???

Citizens of the world

Friends of friends are visiting us for a few days.

I am sure it is a very familiar occurance for ex-pats. A friend or friends of you are going to a certain part of the world and you just happen to have 'a friend' living there... Great, and new friendships are made!! How wonderful.

Well I am very sure if we do, or rather when we go to Holland as part of a trip to Europe our 'new friends' will welcome us with open arms and be very eager to share their lovely country with us.

Another dear friend of mine from Florida, USA, is presently visiting a friend in Holland and last week she was visiting another in France. None of the two ladies has she ever met. They are both friends on her blog, both South Africans, and the friendships have grown to two invitations. Amazing!!!! What shall we DO without internet in our lives...?? And better still, do without friendships!!

Just want to let you know that you are always welcome to send a friend along, because our lives have just become a little more complete and richer for getting to know this lovely family from Holland. (better still, you come and visit yourself) And did we 'kuier' (visit) ! All in Dutch and Afrikaans :)

Birthdays and friends

We celebrated with lots of other South African friends a mutual friend's 50th birthday a couple of weeks ago. I don't know when last have I been part of a group where all the people were Afrikaans speaking or could at least understand it perfectly. I didn't count but I think we were about 30 all together. What a great function it was. (Not because of the Afrikaans... :)) The family went to such a lot of trouble to show their Dad how much they love and appreciate him. Well done Alberts family!!!

Carin said that a friend said to them at their farewell party in Cape Town years ago, " There are wonderful friends waiting for you over in Sydney, you just haven't met them yet." And here they are a few years later and surrounded by so many friends. They are having a breakfast in spring with all their English speaking friends.

On our invitation Carin wrote, "You are not part of our past but definitely part of our future" (We've only known them for a few months). That was very special to me. One gives up so much when you leave your country behind and in our case SA and then Spain, that one some times feel discourage about the friendship factor and here we are already surrounded by great friends and are we looking forward to build a future with them all.

Last Saturday Carli had her group of friends here for her party and the house was full a girlie laughter and noise. What fun they had.

Last night I went to a grown up girlie night to celebrate Annemarie's 40th birthday. (Another new found friend with whom I am building a future with!) We were mostly friends from church and we went out to the Blu Grill and also made a lot of noise and had great food and fun. And to top it all, the Dutch team beat Brazil in soccer and was it a double celebration for Annemarie!! Whoopi Hoeks!! (And I have to put it in here, Rafa Nadal is through to the finals for another Wimbledon win!! Go Rafa go!!)

It's hard work to build new friendships but so rewarding. Thanks to all who is part of my life!!

First crochet project

I started on this blanket for Carli a while ago and just when I thought the end is in sight did I decide to add on a row or two. It was just too small to make it worth the effort so here I am crocheting again.

I was inspired by Sam my very creative and industrious friend while living in Spain. She always has some project she's busy with. So here I am Sam, after 16 months in Ozland following suit. Another week or two and it will be finished.

This is my first ever crochet project so I am very proud of myself.. One needs to get praise from some where :)

Emotions!!!

I haven't been active for quite a while due to various things happening and emotions I had to deal with.

I did my orientation with the New South Wales Dep. of Ed. and Training the previous week and 5 days of in school assessment last week. All went well and apparently I am still fit and able to teach. Yeah for me!! So now to go and hand out my shortened version of my resume to different schools in the area. We'll see if they like my face :)

On the emotional side, without blabbing too many personal details I'll just say that moving abroad is not for sissies. We left South Africa August 2006 and started a new life some where else and life carries on and life is good and then we got bad news from SA and the Soccer World Cup happens in your birthland and then.... And you are not so strong anymore.

But here we are, the sun is shining, I have a new washing machine, Carli had her 13th sleepover birthday party here last night, (lots of laughter and noise and tired eyes this morning..), we will be with friends later today and on we go! So many blessings and another sunrise with wonderful promises.

Journeying through life

Would we have been scared, excited, unsure, exhilarated if we had known what the future holds for us as a young adult? Maybe all of the above, but we might not have had the courage to go on or on the other hand to storm ahead and don't learn the lessons that life has in store for you.

God knows best not to reveal the future but He promises that He will be there to guide us if we put our hand in His. It makes the journey so much more safe even in those times when life knocks you down and you barely can lift up your head and so much more joyful when your cup runneth over.

Enjoy your journey, and don't forget to be glad at the beginning of a new day and to give thanks at the end of a day.

Autumn

I was hoping we could get to a few 'famous for their Autumn colours', towns during Autumn but alas time is running out and the leaves are falling fast here in Sydney. the colder towns have started some time ago with the splendour so I doubt there will be any left when we get there. It has been raining for the last few days and no picture of the lovely colours would look great, specially if it's taken with my mobile.

So I have decided to put the pictures on I took last year in Leura, a quaint little town somewhere inland. I have used some of it before in a news letter last year but I think they're worth showing again.

Boere braai

A few weeks ago we had a very typical South African braai/barbie celebrating Tommy's birthday. He made himself a proper 'konka' braai and as you can see we had great fun sitting around it and had 'lekker' conversations about everything and what not. We left at 11:30 but the other 2 families left only way after 12. Ieteke made 'stokbrood/stickbread dough and the kids and the grown-ups enjoyed the fresh warm bread with butter and syrup. Tommy also made a pumpkin 'potjie' which was very delicious. Food was good, company was good and the fire gave us all a warm fuzzy feeling!!

It is incredible to think that she left home 7 months ago as a 16 year old girl with a big dream in her heart and here she's back, turning 17 tomorrow and with a massive smile on her face, her dream achieved, sailing solo, unattended around the world.

Mothers day at Bobbin Head

We left home early, at 8:15 (for a Sunday that is early!), with the Hoeks, our dear Dutch friends for a 'braai'/barbie at Bobbin Head. It is in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park only a few kilos from home. It was the most beautiful day. The sky was blue blue, no wind, few people while we were there and the company was great. We went for a walk along the mangrove boardwalk and the kids had great fun trying to catch little crabs in the mud. There are thousands of the little things. It was great to be outside and it was a wonderful mothers day for Annemarie and myself.

Afterwards we went to their house and had a few cuppas and played our favourite family card game, Bushman bridge. A card game we also played with other families while still in SA. It's a great fun game for old and young.

These 'braai' facilities are found all over Australia. Wherever you go you'll find it. Always clean and ready to be used.

The Kimberley - Western Australia

We have been in Australia just over 15 months and have seen a lot of Sydney and the immediate surrounds. We have been down the south coast and have explored a few other places outside of the Sydney council area. Our area is quite green and totally overpopulated by Eucalyptus trees. The area is also very hilly and it feels to me I can never see far enough or over the trees do appreciate a beautiful sunrise (hence the name Sonrisa for my blog) or a sunset. I like spread out areas and horizons! I definitely can breathe better in such areas. In Spain we talked about the vista.

One of the areas I am desperate to experience is The Kimberley in north Western Australia. It is a massive area (similar in size to California) and it has red sand and waving grass and amazing mountain ranges. I have put the link to the area and please go to the 'gallery' on the left and have a look. When I watch programs of the area on tv, do I actually experience a physical pain in my chest, can I call it a heartache.. it is soooo beautiful to me.

Long time still before we'll be able to see that part of our new adopted country, but surely we will.

Council clearance/kerb shopping

Twice a year here in Sydney we have a council clearance for your suburb. I am not sure how it works in the rest of Australia. The people start putting things they want to get rid off outside their house on the piece of land (not in the street) about a week before the actual date. Then 2 to 3 days before the council come which is usually just after a week-end, do they start putting out their stuff in all earnest. Not a very neat picture of the neighborhood then.

For some people it is a second income, they collect old and broken things, fix it or collect things which are still in a good condition and then either have garage sales or sell it on ebay.

There are at times the most amazing things that the people discard of. If you travel through the more affluent areas you are flabbergasted about the stuff that's been discarded of. Most of our SA friends have some thing in their homes which come from the council clearance. We also a few things...or two.. The first time you stop to pick up you really have a weird feeling bit it does become easier after the second time and the third time and the ... One of our friends' husband refuse point blank to take part in her 'shopping spree'. She takes her son with and the poor child must do his fathers job... :)

I have driven past a wrought iron bed, beautiful chest of drawers which you can't pick up because of space in your car or in your house, and many other beautiful and useful things. I have a believe that 'less is more' so I do have to keep myself in check when it comes to 'stuff'. It is so easy to hoard things.

Some of my friends will know of the beautiful red leather couch that is (used to be?) in the coffee shop at Exclusive Books in Pretoria, SA. It was my biggest treat to go and sit there with a cuppa and a few books and sink back into the soft much sat in cushions. Well Gaby, hubby, drove past a similar couch last year. He stopped and had a look. It had plastic cover over and a note saying "It's virtually brand new, it doesn't fit the interior any more..." Well he arrived without it. I am sure he could have made a plan.. like putting it on the roof or carry it home.. or ask the people to keep it inside the yard he will get a hute/bakkie/pick-up from some where and will be back in no time. Men!!!???

So with this little bit of information into the life of a Sydneysider will I leave you with a few pictures taken in our street from our latest council clearance. See if you could find something of interst there.

New Year's Eve 2009

I know we are way past the used date but I only got some photos from friends which I wanted to include recently. Anyway it's always good to celebrate for no reason and maybe also to review and think about those 'new years resolutions'. Mmmm!!

It was our first new year's eve in Australia and we were happy to celebrate it with dear friends, Arista and Francois Jooste in beautiful Sydney. Which city in the world has a more magical and beautiful display of fire works?? We could only see the bridge from where we sat, next time we'll have the Opera House also in view. Double splendour!

Barbie/Braai at Roseville Chase

We went for a 'braai' with Heinrich and Tania (SA friends) and kids after church on Sunday to this beautiful place in Sydney. Again it was a 'new discovery' for us. These Ferreiras know how to introduce us to new and exciting places. Still can't believe there are so many picnic spots in the city and often close to water. Open, clean and peaceful! Lovely. Thanks guys it was a great afternoon!!

Camping at Kangaroo Valley

We went camping at Kangaroo Valley last week end with Michael and Ina, long time friends from SA. Her Mom and sister and brother in law also went with. It was great fun and as always enjoyed the discovery of new places. I was very eager to buy property on the spot, as always when we are visiting the country.

Kangaroo Valley is south of Sydney, about 2 hours drive and is situated on the Southern Tablelands. We took the coastal road down, past Wollongong, Kiama and Berry. It's a beautiful drive and specially so because the green rolling hills with cattle grazing sort of roll into the sea. Pretty pretty!

On the way back we left the valley via Moss Vale and Berrima. Berrima is a quaint historical village but unfortunately we haven't had the time and the energy to discover what it is famous for..

The camp site is next to a big river where they do lots of kayaking. The girls were not keen on getting on to the river and the possibility of getting wet. Maybe more so in Carli's case than Minnette's...

Carli took a friend with since Ruan thought it would be nicer to visit with friends on the Saturday night than to spend a week end with older folk. Carli celebrated her 13 th birthday on Sunday and was spoiled by all.

I walked into town and did a bit of sight seeing in the area on foot while the rest were driving to town and sitting on their back sides.. But that's why I have the pictures of the area and they don't!!

I am still taking pictures with my mobile since no camera has fallen into my lap yet so excuse the quality and no close ups.

Australia Day, 26 january

I know I am a little bit late with this, but does time matter..? Last year Carli and I arrived in Australia on the 27th of Jan. so we missed our first celebration with the Nation.

That flag must be the size of a rugby field. The flags on the bridge are already quite big.

We went into town by train and it was quite chaotic. Couldn't believe so many people could fit into it. Great fun!

Gaby hurt his ankle while on holiday so we could not move around as wanted but we 'parked' him in the Botanic Gardens and he was able to watch the ferry race and after that also the tall ship race. Lots of other exciting things were happening around him to keep him occupied.

I think this guy must have lost a few kilos wearing that suit in such extreme heat.

It was extremely hot that day. Close to 40 degrees if I remember correctly so everybody was protected against the fierce sun. These Ozzies love the sun but also take good care to protect themselves. Surely there will always be those who think they are invincible but generally a hat is part of the attire.

All the flags and painted faces and 'I love Australia' t-shirts reminded me of my visit to the USA where we celebrated 4th of July with the De Bruyns in Atlanta. I think the Americans tops the Ozzies with patriotism and celebrations but this bunch gave them a good go.

I do enjoy this view of the city so much.

The motorshow was in Macquarie str and it was bliss to walk in shade looking at all the lovely cars. We wish you could be here Cesar to enjoy it with us.

Afterwards we went with Debbie and Gavin, SA friends to a street barbie which they organised. Ozzies, Polish, Jews, South Africans, Kiwis all enjoying a typical Ozzie barbie. We were totally spent after that.

There are so many things going on at different places in town that one could entertain yourself and be entertained in many other ways. Becoming a citizen is also part of the celebrations. Where it was held in Sydney I do not know but in the smaller towns it is apparently a big part of the daily celebrations. We'll see when our day comes.. :)

Afternoon trip to Central Coast.

We went for a late afternoon swim to Avoca beach and Terrigal in the Central Coast just north of Sydney and Northen Beaches. There are a few lovely coastal towns.

Sunday at Manly

On Sundays we often make use of a family pass that costs us $2.50 per person. Then one can take as many trains, buses or ferries as you want to. Economical for us. The public transport is quite pricey as everything else here in Sydney.

This day we went into town and then took a ferrie out to Manly, a popular beach for surfers as well as for families.

The volley ball nets are there for public use.

If you take the promenade to the right you walk into a nature reserve and end up at North Head one of the entry points into Sydney harbour area. We have walked there on other visits. It is quite spectacular the scenery and there is a type of vegetation that reminds us of the Cape Fynbos. Gaby read that it is a plant community endemic to Australia and that reserve is the only place where it is found. So obviously well protected. We didn't know that previously so will take note next time we walk there.

Gustaf is visiting (part 1)

Gustaf arrived on the 3rd December. And the dynamics of the household changed instantaneously. Like Elaine, a friend said when her 2 Uni boys arrived for the holidays, 'They do take up a lot of space'. I so agree with that statement! More noise, more washing, more clutter and more dishes and lots more fun!! It has been 11 months since we saw him last and the family reunion was GREAT!!

Here are some pictures of our time spend together up till now. I might have to create new posts/headings ever so often to make it easier to manipulate.

First day in Sydney

There are thousands of Flying Foxes/fruit bats hanging in the trees in the Botanical Gardens. It is quite a sight to see them fly off at dusk to go and feed.

The sulfur crested cockatoo is very common and reminds me of the noisy Hadedas in RSA. If ever, please not, I am not living here would I also miss them like I missed the hadedas when living in Spain.

I think one pays $80 to walk across Sydney Harbour Bridge. One is attached to railings with a harness. Next time...?

Sydney is magic at night. The picture of the people at the Opera House is taken late afternoon on a Saturday. Some are leisurely awaiting a show while others just walk around, enjoying the surrounds.

Advance Australia Fair

I stood in the galery at Carli's school at the end year prize giving assembly looking down at my daughter where she is standing up right and singing with her schoolmates the Australian national anthem. It reminded me of our/my days at Arcadia Primary and Waterkloof Primary.

It was my first time having the opportunity to sing the National Anthem and suddenly I was confronted with the option would I sing along or not..to be or not to be...conforming, accepting, disregarding, enjoying, embracing, forgetting... what shall it be? I experienced in those few minutes a mixture of emotions which I could not explain to myself and am still having troubles with. Gustaf standing next to me detected a shiny eye and gave a supporting chuckle and said, "Our's (meaning the South African Anthem) is nicer." To which I respond, yeah but this is also nice and has beautiful words.

Am I ready to let go of 'Nkosi Sikele Africa..' I don't know, I am soooo proud to tell people I am a South African and an African for that matter but here I am in a new country who has opened her doors and arms to us and is giving us an opportunity no make a new life for us amongst her inhabitants.

Maybe it rather has to be be, embracing the new and appreciate and remember the past. One doesn't need to 'let go'.

I do hope some of you expats can identify with me and I would like to hear from you how you coped with all the unfamiliar emotions you are experiencing or had experienced.

Gaby often tells me we are sojourners, only passing through. But the reality is that there are so many things and people clinging to your heart and to the soles of your feet.

'Advance Australia Fair' is the refrain at the end of each verse and it will become my heart's refrain...in time I trust...in time.

First visit to Orange, NSW

Gaby and I went to Orange on Monday. Orange is a town/city with a population of about 35 000 and is about 280km's from Sydney, in NSW.

He had to go for a consultation session with their council. We slept in a Motor Inn (smart name for a Motel) which was quite smartly decorated and well equipped.

While he was working Tuesday I was galavanting all over town in a lovely Mitsubishi Pajero. Think it is the smartest car I ever drove and enjoyed it thoroughly. "I love that car!" Only the Ozzies will understand what I mean by that because of Mitsubishi adds on tv.

The trip was food for soul because we were out in the country and I saw cattle, sheep, horses, goats, chooks, wineries and fruit and cherry (is it a fruit..) orchards. The cherries were ripening and I had a few very sweet cherries to taste at different places.

The surrounds are lovely and the town, pardon me, city is very clean and I met lovely friendly people at various places. Lots going on in the area, the only negative it is not close to the sea (as if I've lived close to the sea all my life).

It gets very cold in winter and they often have snow. Must say if you have a well insulated and heated house the prospect of cooler summers sounds very enticing. Spain changed my outlook on hot summers for ever I think.

I had tea up in the 'mountain', a little 'mount' with a massive slice of carrot cake and with a King Parrot as company. The photo is misleading because it is a giant cup which they use as a bird feeder and water trough. I also had the company of the notorious Ozzie fly. My goodness golly what a nuisance they are. I know now why the Ozzies walk around in the bush with a hat and little corks and goodies attached to the rim, dangling around your face. Strange place we live in.

I visited their art gallery and library which were most impressive and also the most beautiful little nursery with the name of 'Anything Grows'. What a delight!!

Gaby and I stopped at a little pub restaurant and had some tappas and a beer each. Was lovely to sit outside when the day started cooling down.

Again, my apologies for the bad quality of the pictures. Hopefully we'll replace our stolen camera before we go on holiday in January.

Jakarandas in Sydney

What a joy it was to drive through the streets and saw the purple splendour of the Jakarandas. In Coin, Spain if I can remember correctly, I saw not more than 5 Jakarandas. I was very grateful for that too.

Those of you who are not from SA and even more so, not from Pretoria won't know what the fuss is all about, but Pretoria, my home town in SA is also known as the Jakaranda City. There must be a few thousand in the city (is it possible or am I exaggerating..?)

Some of these trees have a deeper colour purple and many at present are already full with leaves and also still full with flowers.

Visit from friends.

Our friends Louis, Karen and Kyla from South Africa came to visit us during the July school holidays. Some of you from Spain would remember them as they also visited us there. They came a few days before Carli's birthday party which was held on the 5th April on Dom and Tanya's finca. What a great time we had that day.

Anyway Louis went to a conference in Perth and then they came over east to visit us. They are amazing travelers and are always eager to explore and are very excited about every new place they discover (and they've been around...not a novelty to them)

Louis and Karen went down to the South coast for a few days while Kyla stayed with us. They convinced me that there are fewer eucalyptus trees inland and took photos to prove it. This was taken in the Kangaroo valley. I don't know how the new arrivals to this country coped with all the trees.

Kyla must have been very glad that Carli had holiday because the previous year in Spain she went with her to the Spanish school and felt very sorry for Carli!! Anyway over here they do speak a kind of a English... Only kidding, we love the Ozzie accent and Carli is slowly picking up more of the local lingo. Wonder what her brother is going to say when he arrives in a few weeks time from SA?

Applying for residency in Australia

We are in the process of applying for permanent residence in Australia and how I wish some one has given us information about all the 'stuff' which can be done beforehand, specially if you are in a hurry to get it done.

A few things for all those interested in seeking 'greener pastures' in Ozland. I know all who has decided to leave their country, where ever in the world that might be, has a different reason for doing it. Be it as it may I hope some of the information I am giving here today might help to smooth things out a little.

A few things:-
1. Get the whole family's 'unabridged birth certificates' and your 'unabridged marriage certificate', if applicable, from Dep.of Home Affairs. I think even if you don't have any plans to leave the country is it still a good idea to get it. You NEVER know..!!

2. Just before you leave have your police clearance done for all above 16yrs. It is valid for 12 months here in Aus., as long as you haven't been back to that country. If you have lived any where else the last 10 years get from those countries as well.

3. Have transcripts of all your academic qualifications ( IN ENGLISH!!). If you need to have your qualifications accredited by a department here in Aus. start the process asap, even before you leave your country. It's all done by internet and you can mail all your documents from anywhere. In certain states is it easier to get accreditation eg Nursing qualifications accreditation in Queensland much easier than NSW. And as far as I know once you have the accreditation is it valid in all the states. Do your home work concerning that. After receiving your transcript submit it for Australian assessment at following website: vetassess.com.au

4. If your children have attended English schools have a letter from the school stating that fact, then they don't need to write the English Proficiency test (only children above 16). If you have worked in an English environment get similar documentation. No need for the test then.

5. Men remember to get your army clearance papers (if applicable). We eventually needed some one in SA to do the phoning and faxing because, eish... "de computer, hy's off line" ..... etc etc :)

We are working through an agent because the company who has sponsored us to come here is also sponsoring our permanent residency visa. It is much easier but more expensive. We are just happy that they do it because ours is not so straight forward, eg we lived in Spain before we came here and we have a child in SA who is studying but on our visa application. We need to prove that he is still dependant on us which makes it more complicated with all the bank statements and rental payments etc.

The agency we are working through is called Hitchcock and associates. They've been in this business for many years and have seminars all over SA. They will be in Pta at the end of Nov again. They told us that Aus. Immigration hasn't slowed down the intake it is just that some professions are handled faster because of shortages. They have offices in Pta and Cape Town.

Amigos en Espana.

As much as this is info into our lives, is it also visual memories and written reminders for us as a family of all the blessings we receive and the amazing time we had in Spain getting to know all these people mentioned below, who enriched our lives with their love, acceptance, encouragement, care, adventurous spirits and love for God and life.

We (the children and I) arrived in Spain on the 6th Aug 2006, the day before Gustaf's birthday. Our friends Deon and Samantha arrived a month before us and was so willing and happy to show us around and introduce us to Coin the town where we stayed for 2 and a half years. Gaby arrived 2 months later.

Coin lies inland from the Costa del Sol, about 30km's from Marbella and 25 from Malaga.

During our first week in Coin, we met Andy and Rebecca and their lovely girls Eliana and Annabelle. They welcomed us with open arms and hearts. Their hospitality and care humbled me and made us feel at home quick quick. We spent many wonderful hours with them and always looked forward to a day out exploring which Andy has organized. They are genuine people, with a genuine love for God with lots to give and lots of adventure and fun in them!

We were fortunate to have family fairly close by. Kobus (Gaby's brother), Miriam and the kids, Joshua and Kayla lives in Algeciras. We didn't see them often enough but had very good times together and the cousins got to know each other. It was good for the two brothers to connect again after many years of geographical separation. They as a family have a heart for the Muslims and are very active in various roles. Miriam is strong on child and women ministry. Believing with them that one day it can become a full time ministry.

Jean and Stuart were as loving and caring to us and I learned lots from our dear friends. Stuart is a gifted artist and they do love Jesus so much. They are eager workers and prayer warriors in the Kingdom.

Dom and Tanya had a little baby girl Isabella and now little Natalia has joined the family. An amazing hardworking, positive and hospitable family. We had many 'lekker' visits with them. Dom's childlike faith in Jesus has been an inspiration to us all.

What would we have done without Henti and Antoon in Coin. Our rocks and very dear friends. They gave us some valuable lessons in our 'lacking cultural life', sharing their knowledge of food, wine, music, Spanish life, beautiful Spain, politics and life in general. We do miss our meals together on their patio with Coin's mountains in the background. Coin, Spain would have been a much poorer experience for us if it was not for them. We love them dearly. They also introduced us to some of their friends like Johan and Mari who we do dare to call friends now. Where will we see them next, in Spain or Cape Town? They are always eager to help! Carli met the author of the 'Liewe Heksie' childrens books, Verna Vels at Henti and Antoon's finca and felt very privelidged when 'Levinia' read a story to her.

Karen and her fincas..., if only I could have finca 2!!! My laughing buddy, strong in prayer and desperately desires to do God's will. Always ready to encourage and pray with you. We still have good laughs when we talk on skype.

John and Maureen, my mom and dad in Spain. Pity they don't live there permanently. At least every visit was packed full. An amazing couple with humongous hearts and lots of wisdom. We shared many jokes and spiritual conversations. We love them so much and hopefully will see them here in Australia when they come and visit the family... :)

Roel and Inge came into our lives with a bang and surely the time was too short to discover all of them. We had a few wonderful meals at their beautiful guest house up in Alozaina and it was also there that we spent our last night in Spain. And how bitterly cold it was. Hardworking, creative, hospitable, generous friends!! Looking forward to their visit next year!!

Jonathan and Amanda our kind, nature loving, creative, gentle friends. They are living the simple but rich life that many desire. I do miss sitting on their patio and enjoying the vista and silence.

Gloria was my first Spanish teacher in Spain. Always encouraging and believing you are the best. Gloria and hubby Christian gave up their city lives and decided to live the better life in the country and to raise their boy Niels there.

Then there was Jane and her boys Callum and Tommy. My colourful and never a dull moment friend. A woman with lots of courage and spunk. I miss our jokes.

I do not have a better picture of Jane and none of her tall handsome eldest son Callum.

Fernando, Daniella and Santiago are our friends from Argentina. He taught me to make gnochhi and philosophied with Gaby for hours using Spanish, English, Spanglish, body language and dictionaries to communicate. What precious people, such courage and positive attitudes. We wish them well!

The Argentinians love their mate', a herbal drink. Fernando was once stopped by the Guardia Civil because they thought he was drinking some 'potent' stuff.

Kevin and Lorraine with kids Andrew and Hannah were our 'living faraway friends', living down at the coast. We watched with them the Rugby World Cup last year, he is from the UK... :) We were so blessed by their generous hearts. Compassionate people with lots to give in the Kingdom. We wish them well in Ireland!!

And then the YWAMMERS (Youth With A Mission) descended on us. Unfortunately only a few months before we left. What fun we had together with the amazing Dixon family, all 8 of them. Johnny, Traci and the girls (Abby, Jessie, Ollie, Megan and Emma)and Nathan were such a blessing to us. All very creative in different ways and all eager to be busy with Kingdom stuff!! It was too short!! I am sure somewhere in the future our paths will cross again for a longer period!! Amen!

Dave and Rita, also from YWAM, became also dear to us and gave us very valuable guidance and encouragement when we felt very lost and confused about our future. Amazing people! Time to visit your favorite city again Dave!!

Deon, Samantha, Jazzy and Dane who where there from the beginning and who were so much part of our lives. The ups and downs, the fun and no fun times, the crying together and laughing together times. Life in Spain would not have been the same without them there. Energetic, artistic, creative, positive, adventurous and God loving. Sam knows what she means to me and I'll always be very grateful for all the little life treasures and wisdoms she 'exposed' to me. The greatest being the fact that she accepts EVERYBODY who crosses her path as is and shower them with Jesus' love. We do miss them and Carli specially misses her creative play friend Jazzy!

There were many who passed through, some linger longer but all left something beautiful in our hearts. People like Chandy, an exciting, colourful and artistic friend, Sandra and Juan our Bohemian very arty friends from Barcelona, Craig and Debbie Cooke, he a South African and designing Golf courses, she from the USA and their lovely kids. Judy and Chris whom I cleaned house for. His hobby, collecting stamps (Philatelist, new word for me..) became his main source of income and she is always busy in her beautiful English garden in Spain. Chani with his bar where we had many cuppas and Andalucian breakfasts. Ron and Marian who took care of us when Gaby wasn't there yet. Graham and Cherryl, also South Africans who came just before we left. We had a few good, fun times together. We wish them well in the UK. Mar and her husband Freddy. She had a travel agency in town and could make the BEST paellas. He is a pathologist and they are originally from Galicia. So giving and helpful.

Latin-American Fiesta, Sydney

We enjoyed a little taste of Spanish American life today in Sydney. The Latin-American Fiesta was held this weekend. We had lunch with friends, Francois and Arista (friends of my sister and her family in SA and now our friends here in Ozland) at their apartment close to Darling Harbour and then walked down to join the festivities.

It was great fun and we enjoyed the vibe and the different song and dance groups. Carli had change to practice her Spanish once and it was lovely to hear the language again although it is becoming a little foreign to us.

We walked through a part which reminded me of Europe but instead of saying that, I said: 'It feels like I am overseas.' Now do with that whatever you want. It surely made us laugh and the remark made me wonder where I am or coming from... It reminds me of the Springbok and Wallaby game in Perth. The Aussie commentator made a remark about the fact that they don't know if it is a 'home' or 'away' game because of all the thousands of SAcan supporters in the stadium.

Birthday in Brisbane

Gaby and I went to Brisbane to celebrate my birthday. He was working there the previous 3 days and and I was blessed by been given an air ticket to join him there. We stayed at the Gold Coast for the Thursday night and then went to Ben and Beulah Martin, SA friends in Brissie (Brisbane) for the next few days.

Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast

We had a great time sightseeing and visiting with the Martins. We have been following each other all over the world. When they were living in the Netherlands they visited us in Spain, then we visited during December in South Africa and now in Australia. We have decided we'll rather keep on seeing each other here in Ozland than to find each other in another continent. Enough is enough!! AND we are both VERY happy here, so why?

Gnocchi!!

Our dear friends Fernando and Daniella from Spain (born Argentinians) introduced us to the wonderful taste of Gnocchi. Both are half Italian. It is a cheap but tasty and very jovial dish to eat together. Typical Latino. Our last meal with them in Spain was a cooking lesson by Fernando and then we shared the end result together. Sweet memories!! Well tonight I made Gnocchi for the first time with a Bolognese sauce. It is a long process but very rewarding when you manage to form the balls just like Fernando did. Salude to all who makes us smile!!

Some of you know that I am in Aged Care. Some of my clients live on their own with just a family member popping in regularly and some still live with their partners. One of my favorite and dearest clients is a lady of 93. She lives with her second husband in the house he moved into with his first wife. They got married after both their partners died. They are going for 30 years now.

He moves around very slowly and she either stays in bed or sit for periods on the veranda if she feels up to it.

They move me to tears, not because they are old and slow but because of their amazing love and respect for each other. When he goes to the room after she had her breakfast which I have prepared she will greet him with. 'Hallo my love, I've missed you.' I shared with her a family crisis and she told me to keep on praying, God will sort it out. I only see her on a Wednesday and after receiving good news I went there on the Friday and found them watching tv in the lounge holding hands. I had to go because I felt bad about her well being. She was quite stressed out about the matter. Anyway when she saw me she immediately said to me 'You've got good news and took my hands, pulled me down towards her a gave me a hug and kiss on the cheek. Thats the kind of person she is.

Won't the world be a much better place if we can all have such love and respect for each other.

Visit to South Africa in Dec 2008

I know it is almost December again, but since some of our friends have not received an update I will put some info and pictures up.

Ruan, Carli and myself spend 7 weeks in South Africa with family and friends. Gaby left for Australia the day after Christmas and started working at his new job just after he got over the jet lag.

It was obviously great to see all the loved ones again and had good laughs and at times, cries, with all. All the socializing cost me dearly in the weighing department. Just decided I will get back in a routine when in Australia but my oh my...

The children and I arrived in Sydney on the 27th January the day after Australian Day. We were sad to have missed out on the celebrations but got ready for Carli's first day at school straight away. We were very impressed with the way we were received at her school and she settled down very quickly and with great ease.

We stayed in a company paid apartment until the end of February and got to know the route to school quickly. We have survived the Sydney roads so far with out a GPS and actually do know our way quite well. I think you take note of your surroundings and get 'markers' far quicker if you venture out without the 'much longed for GPS by my children' very well.

It tells me that joy, laughter, happiness, contentment, peace etc etc are the main ingredients for life in Heaven. Wow isn't that amazing!! Why are we not focused more on our inheritance than focusing on the here and now. And if we do I am sure we will start living out our inheritance here, right where we are. The first day of a new venture for me!

I have decided that I might reach more people or rather that I might get regular responses from those whom I love and miss very much. It might also serve as a place of info for those who are interested in moving across the waters to bushy, noisy (birds), exciting, beautiful, English speaking Australia... I will do regular updates and in the process share the new exciting chapter in our lives with you.

We had a rocking high temperature of 28 degrees today, remember it is the southern hemisphere and suppose to be cold. We were desperate to go to the beach, one of the many which hasn't been discovered by us yet but due to a family ailment we opted for a closer venue where we could be in the shade. We had a peaceful picnic under the Aussies' beloved gum trees and were entertained by a few kookaburras and few other cockatoo type of birds. We took, Pumpkin, our Jack Russel with but she had a hard time staying with us due to the amazing forest world which she wanted to go and discover.

I unfortunately can't add a photo of our picnic today since our little digital camera is lost. We think it might have been pinched from the car one night because I often forget to lock the car after parking in our drive way. It is also where the car stays for the night and the other morning we found my wallet open on the back seat with the little money I had in there missing. So we suspect the same happened to the camera which was often left in the cabinet. Me bad, irresponsible, yeah I know. It was very old and quite an embarrassing little object since the battery casing had to be kept into place with elastic bands and also everybody else walks around with much smarter and newer paraphernalia.

Well this is just the beginning of a hopefully long and exciting relationship I am going to have with you via this blog.
